Cross Jazmine Sullivan and your car windows are toast. Try it twice and you’ll be staring down the barrel of a Glock. Not quite the attitude you’d expect from an R&B diva, huh? The Philadelphia native penned a bulk of peerless lyrics for her debut album, “Fearless,” which features a reggae-tinged lead single, “Need U Bad,” produced by her mentor, Missy Elliot. The track propelled Sullivan to the top of three Billboard R&B and hip-hop charts. Sullivan, 21, currently on the road with Maxwell, will be performing at the United Palace Theater on Nov. 23 and 24.
Humble beginnings. “A lot of people think I just popped up and that I didn’t pay my dues, but I was actually signed to Jive Records when I was 16. But I just wasn’t ready. I’ve grown so much since then. Looking back, it turned out be the best thing for my career.”
It’s showtime! “When I was 11, I got to perform at the Apollo Theater, but I messed up. The order of the songs were changed and I didn’t know. I was just standing there in silence.”
Drama queen. “I wrote about things girls usually don’t talk about on ‘One Night Stand,’ ‘Bust Your Windows’ and ‘Call Me Guilty’ – a song about domestic violence.”
Misdemeanor charge. “[Executive producer] Missy Elliot is like a big sister. She has the greatest work ethic and pushed me really hard in the studio.”
“Max” support. “Maxwell is such a sweet guy. He makes me this special tea to help my voice recover. I’m honored that he felt I should be part of this tour.”
